2017 - 2018 FELLOWSHIP PRELIMINARY RESULTS

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Atkins Young Artist Program is proud to announce the results of its inaugural call for applications to participate in our 2017-2018 fellowships at the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The Atkins Young Artists Program received 114 applications from 13 countries:

  • Azerbaijan

  • Belarus

  • Brazil

  • Colombia

  • Germany

  • Japan

  • Kazakhstan

  • Moldova

  • Mongolia

  • Russian Federation

  • Ukraine

  • United States of America

  • Uzbekistan

28 singers have advanced to the final live auditions in Saint Petersburg and 25 singers have been selected to participate in live pre-final screening auditions. The live pre-final screening auditions will take place on June 24th and several singers from the pre-finals screening will be advanced to the finals.

Preliminary Audition Panel members, who reviewed the vocalists' video recordings and made recommendations on advancing applicants to the live finals are:
 

  • Sarah Billinghurst Solomon, former Assistant General Manager for Artistic Affairs at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
  • Michael Heaston, Executive Director of Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
  • Olga Kondina, Mariinsky soloist, People's Artist of Russia, juror at international competitions.

  • Peter McClintock, opera director at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
  • Mikhail Petrenko, Mariinsky soloist, international opera star, juror at international competitions
  • Nino Sanikidze, head-coach of the Los Angeles Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program
  • Diane Zola, Director of Artistic Administration at Houston Grand Opera

 

 

The final auditions will take place on the 25th and 26th of June, 2017 at the Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg. The exact time will be posted and published on the Mariinsky and Atkins Young Artists Program web-sites. The finals will be open to the public.

  • Maestro Valery Gergiev, Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Artistic Director of the Atkins Young Artists Program at Mariinsky

  • Sarah Billinghurst Solomon, former Assistant General Manager for Artistic
    Affairs at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Artistic Advisor to the Atkins Young Artists Program at Mariinsky
  • Veronica Atkins, Founder of the Atkins Young Artists Program at the Mariinsky, Board Member of the Metropolitan Opera and philanthropist



Members of the Atkins Young Artists Program Artistic Advisory Board attending finals:
 

  • Eva Wagner-Pasquier, internationally recognized opera manager and consultant, worked at Bayreuth Festival, Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Bastille Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Teatro Real de Madrid, and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence
  • Diane Zola, Director of Artistic Administration at Houston Grand Opera
 



In the days leading to the auditions, all 53 singers will participate in training sessions with the Atkins Young Artists Program fellowship teachers and tutors Olga Kondina (voice), Peter McClintock (character study and development), Maria Nikitina (Italian language and diction) and will have solid rehearsal time with accomplished opera coaches Yana Zubova and Elena Samarina (style and interpretation).
